Abu Dhabi GP: The story behind my weekend
Everyone at Williams – and more widely in Formula 1 – will be racing in memory of Sir Frank at this weekend’s Saudi Arabian GP.
He had a remarkable life when you consider how he started out and what he built. He made his dream into a reality and developed a team that is one of the most successful and loved in our sport.
Even though I only joined Williams in 2019, when Sir Frank had passed the day-to-day running of the team to Claire and was no longer travelling to many races, it was clear his love for the organisation that carries his name was just as strong.
He basically lived at the factory. When I was having a quick break during sim sessions I’d often see him outside taking a breath of fresh air, surveying the surroundings, and chatting to employees as they passed by. I knew I was representing a special company.
Following the takeover last year, the family stepped back. But the team is still Williams – the name is there because of the identity, the heritage and the values that Sir Frank built and instilled. We’re trying to retain those ethics and that culture moving forward, while driving the team back towards where it deserves to be.
I’ll be remembering Sir Frank fondly this weekend as we tackle a new circuit on the calendar.
As it’s Formula 1’s first time to Jeddah, and with no references at all from other categories, it’s completely new territory for everyone. The Jeddah Corniche Circuit looks very fast and it is a unique layout, with 27 corners, and a high average lap speed.
The cars should feel rapid around the track and the street element will add to the experience. I always love street tracks, and this will be the first one I’ll tackle at night.
As ever, keep an eye on my socials for updates during the weekend.
I hope to do you proud, Sir Frank.
