Abu Dhabi GP: The story behind my weekend
It’s great to be back in Italy for a third time this season after the races at Monza and Mugello.
I last drove Imola in Formula 3, so you can imagine it’s a quicker experience this time! It’s a very exciting, old-school circuit, with plenty of character.
With the condensed timetable this weekend, and just one opportunity to practice, the pre-race prep was always going to be intense. Unfortunately in this morning’s practice session I had two separate braking issues which cost valuable time.
That put me on the back foot in terms of references, so as a team we had to make some tricky decisions about where to go with the car set-up.
In qualifying I found more and more pace with each lap. After practice, given the issues, I was probably around 1.5s off the Q2 barrier. By the end of qualifying the gap was just over one tenth.
Okay, its frustrating not to make the Q2 cut, but the margins were very small and I’m pleased with my qualifying performance overall.
Eyes on tomorrow’s race now, when I hope to continue that progression!
