Abu Dhabi GP: The story behind my weekend
That was a wet one! My first proper session driving a Formula 1 car in the wet – or at least pushing the car in the wet.
The conditions weren’t straightforward today but I felt comfortable and got up to speed easily. On the first set of tyres my pace looked good and I was hovering around P10 for a while.
Unfortunately, on the second set of tyres I just couldn’t get a clear lap in. There was traffic, then a yellow flag when Antonio went off, and then the red flag at the end. Without those problems I believe I easily had the pace to make it into Q2.
George was very competitive today, and on the first set of tyres I was quicker than him – so that showed what was possible had everything come together.
There was much more in the car too, as I didn’t get to use the full engine mode. But that’s just how it is sometimes – just one of those situations.
Tomorrow is another day, and now I know what to expect I’ll start it with more confidence to push compared to last weekend. But all within reason of course. I still want to learn, a lot can happen, and the aim is to reach the finish. Let’s see what we can do!
